A List to End All Lists
I am starting a blog because...well...I am bored.
I have been playing Kill Team (2018) for about 2 years now. With the imminent launch of 9th edition or #New40k in a couple of weeks and my disappointment in not getting an Indomitus box, I started thinking about what I actually wanted to collect as an army. Since I was no longer locked into collecting a Necron army I needed to start looking at things I have had fun playing in Kill Team.
For Kill Team I have played a lot of armies, mostly by proxy, because I don't have an unlimited budget. But the two I enjoyed the most were Death Guard and Genestealer Cults. I actually loved playing Thousand Sons, and Heretic Astartes and some other bands as well. Since I had most of a Genestealer list from the started box I added a few extra models. Then I swapped out some of my neophytes for acolytes...and added some abhorrents...and painted everything...and then added more and more and more..then I really wanted to add some Jackals...and one thing led to another and now we're here.
I am going to start a Genestealer army.
Today's activity so far have been about getting together a budget. I wanted an army that I could have a decent chance of doing awesome and very dumb things with. I don't really care about winning. I don't really care about being "competitive". I want something that plays to the genestealer cults strengths that separate it from Astra Militarum or Tyranids and really plays to the strengths of the cult. To me, genestealer cults mean rewarding traps very heavily and melting nearly immediately. I love the idea of improvised and stolen weapons, tech, and materials all culminating in a mass plan that if it doesn't go off is a scramble up a river of shit.
I want it to be clever or disastrous.
How do I get there? Well, I wanted to start where I think everything should start. By including a bunch of models that I really love. For me, there are 5 main models in the Genestealer Cult list that I wanted to include because they are great.
This is the only wheeled vehicle I have seen in 40k that actually makes sense. Every other vehicle seems to assume that the world has earth-like gravity. Which is fun and makes the vehicles seem familiar, but that is also stupid and bad. I don't feel like being negative so I am going to say that the sculpt of the Ridgerunner reminds me of the Blockade Runner from Star Wars for some reason and that makes me love it even more. I want to build at least one and in the next post, I'll show you how this stupid obsession manifests in the craziest way.
Again, very utilitarian in design. In makes me happy to see dirt bikes in 40k instead of whatever the Adeptus Astartes are riding around on. Those don't look practical even if you are 8' tall and have 3 hearts. Regardless I like the idea of just picking up civilian or industrial assets and turning them into a part of the trap. Also, there is something very "Mad Max" about the whole set up that I really enjoy. Stealing vehicles in the wasteland and turning them into scouting assets/weapons platforms seems like a ton of fun for me.
This is even further into the "Mad Max" / wasteland raiders of it all. When that guy came out with the Genestealer cult Kill Team box I wanted one. Mostly because someone put a little cowboy hat on him...I wish I could find a good photo of one...and I was immediately taken with the idea of the lawman wandering into the trap in a spaghetti western. In the lore of 40k, I assume it is an Inquisitor wandering down a dusty street with the entire cult surrounding him from the shadows as he faces down the Patriarch. In this case, I am, as I normally do, rooting for the bad guys to eat and assimilate the stupid lawman.
Because of a Warhammer Community post that was talking about the New 40k, I started imagining how I would bring in brood brothers in more interesting ways. Now, my initial list isn't going to have a huge amount of brood brothers or Astra Militarum equipment. But, I want to include it later. There are three specific pieces of kit that I have loved for a long time from the guard that I hope to one day include and be able to swap in and out of this list. The only way that I am going to get there is by starting to do all this.
I want this blog to be a sort of stop-gap as I get the rest of everything together. I would like to quickly expand to grab YouTube, Instagram, email, and web domains. I personally don't really want to be on Instagram (mostly because well...I don't like Facebook) but there are a fuck-ton of 40k fans over there. I also want to do a little bit of graphic design this afternoon. Maybe start setting up a look and feel. It will undoubtedly change as I get further into this but the defaults are fine for right this second.
Longer-term I want to include movies into this. Obviously, that is why I am grabbing the YouTube channel. The first couple are going to be about the decisions to form an army, how I am going about it. Then I want to get painting videos online as we get into that. I should grab Twitch as well. That seems like a thing I should do.
So it is time to walk my dog. I'll be back this afternoon to get more obsessed with my own brilliant idea later.

1) Patriarch
A big, bad, genestealer patriarch is a thing of beauty. I have looked at them on GWs website and at my FLGS about a thousand times and always thought, "Man, this would be great! If only I had a reason for buying one of these." I want him to have his little buddies (I have since found out they are called familiars). I also wanted them to have clearly broken from one of the hive fleets hundreds of evolutionary cycles ago to go be infiltrators. This to me means that I get to come up with a colour scheme that has nothing to do with any of the hive fleets -a huge bonus in my mind because the GW sanctioned tyranid schemes are just the worst.2) Achilles Ridgerunner

What are the larger plans for this?
Well. I am ambitious so lets put it out there.I want this blog to be a sort of stop-gap as I get the rest of everything together.
